The Children’s Museum of Sonoma County is looking for a Camps Lead to join our team for an exciting summer of Wonder Camps!
Summary
The Camps Lead will play an integral role in the day-to-day operation of summer camps at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County. This position is ideal for someone with teaching experience and classroom management experience, who is passionate about leading children in an educational environment and ensuring a safe and engaging camp experience. The Camps Lead will supervise campers, facilitate and teach camp curriculum, and provide leadership and guidance throughout the camp sessions. This position reports to the Camps & Volunteer Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Camp Participant Support:
- Welcome camp participants each day and orient them to the Museum and camp activities, fostering a positive and welcoming environment.
- Assist with the daily camper drop-off and pick-up process, ensuring safety and clear communication with caregivers.
- Supervise camper participation in activities, applying effective group management techniques to ensure engagement and a positive learning and social environment.
- Facilitate and teach camp curriculum, ensuring there are opportunities for active participation from all campers and providing clear instructions for activities.
- Assist in camper supervision during breaks and free play in public areas of the Museum, ensuring their safety and adherence to camp guidelines and Museum rules.
- Monitor camper interaction with exhibits to ensure proper use and promote respectful behavior.
- Maintain open and proactive communication with caregivers, camp team members, and supervisors about camper progress, behaviors, and needs.
Camp Operations and Maintenance:
- Assist in the setup, upkeep, and organization of camp spaces to ensure they are ready for daily activities.
- Ensure camp areas remain clean, safe, and organized throughout the day.
Camp Development and Documentation:
- Assist in developing and implementing camp procedures and contribute to staff training initiatives.
- Demonstrate a high level of professional conduct, serving as a positive role model for campers and maintaining respectful interactions with caregivers, visitors, and team members.
- Observe and document camp activities, camper behavior, and learning progress, and report findings to the Camps & Volunteer Manager.
- Ensure any issues, concerns, or incidents are documented and communicated promptly and appropriately.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education is preferred.
- Minimum 2 years teaching experience, with strong classroom/group management and leadership skills.
- Bilingual skills a plus.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with children, caregivers, and staff.
- Knowledge of developmental stages and learning needs of children and families a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage a group of children in a classroom setting while maintaining structure and positive behavior.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Ability to interact with diverse groups of people.
- Ability to effectively supervise and engage children, ensuring their safety and fostering an environment of learning and fun.
- Proficiency in Word and Excel.
- Must be available for trainings prior to camp start date, either on weekdays or weekends.
- First Aid/CPR Certification required.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds.
- Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to communicate clearly.
Position Details
This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt seasonal position, reporting to the Camps & Volunteer Manager.
Pay Range: $23.00 – $25.00 per hour.
One week paid time off during the summer camp session (to be scheduled with supervisor).
Employment Start Date: May 19, 2025 (Trainings will be scheduled between this date and camp start date.)
Camp Start Date: June 9, 2025
Camp End Date: August 8, 2025
Employment End Date: August 15, 2025 (Final debrief session will be scheduled before this date.)
